The Link Between Milwaukee County First and the AFSCME As I was perusing MCF's website, I saw a post from Chris Liebenthal that said this about the pro-tax rally for Sunday: "Milwaukee County First is calling on all of its members and friends to join our union brothers and sisters of AFSCME and to show up at Serb Hall at 1:30 pm to welcome Scott Walker and his special interest buddies and tell them that we put Milwaukee County first and so should Walker!!" (underlined emphasis is mine) Interesting choice of words. I had no idea that Milwaukee County First was affiliated with the AFSCME. From "MCF's "about us" link, it says they are a "grassroots network of organizations and individuals from all walks of life." I hate to tell you this, Chris, but individuals from all walks of life do not support raising taxes during a recession, nor do they share your disdain for Walker. For those of you who may not know, Chris Liebenthal (MCF's Chair) is also the "People Chair for Local 645". And he started his little non-profit crew of liberal bloggers on June 15th, 2009 for the purpose of ensuring Walker does not become governor. From the beginning, he has used this liberal front group to criticize Walker and to distort his record. This should be no surprise since he's been doing it for months on his blog. But this last post from MCF is a real teller. Liebenthal refers to his non-profit as "Milwaukee County First", but if we were to demand accuracy, he should have named it "Milwaukee County Employees First." (In fact, from this day forward, I will refer to them as Milwaukee County Employees First.) A post on his blog adds more evidence to my conclusion: Looking Out for Milwaukee County And finally, I think we need a little humor to end this piece. In MCF's article, they call on all of their members to make a showing at Serb Hall to let Walker know that he and his special interest buddies that they should put Milwaukee County First. This is hilarious for a few reasons. First, how many members do you have, Chris? Judging by your petition drive, all but ten people will be there to represent your group. And that is being generous. Second, I love how liberals always add the "special interest" verbiage into a criticism of any conservative politician. If a sentence or criticism doesn't sound right, hey, just add the "special interest" phrase to make it complete. They act like unions like AFSCME and WEAC aren't a special interest groups. And third, preserving every social program in the county during a recession isn't looking out for Milwaukee County taxpayers, which IS Milwaukee County. Liberals seem to forget this point. Milwaukee County is not the employees or their unions, but rather the populous that pays their wages and ensures they have a job. And if the general populous has to reduce their budgets and tighten their spending, then why shouldn't the county government? Addendum:You can check Liebenthal's response to me here. According to Chris' rebuttal, my indictment that MCF is nothing more than a union spin-off is just a matter of semantics. He compares his reference to members of AFSCME as "brothers and sisters" to how Christians use similar language. Someone should inform Chris, however, that Christians only refer to other Christians as brethren. This is because the Holy Spirit resident in Christians qualifies them to be children of God. Analogously then, Liebenthal has admitted that MCF is a non-profit organization furnished by union members. This makes a lot of sense, actually. Why else would Liebenthal confusedly name his non-profit "Milwaukee County First" when he only fights for unionized County Employees and tax increases? Perhaps Liebenthal will someday realize that Milwaukee County taxpayers ARE Milwaukee County, and therefore he should be fighting for them in the same way Scott Walker does - fighting to freeze the property tax levy and Milwaukee's sales tax.
