There is nothing to stop an engine crew from doing search and rescue. I agree with the Chief that closing a truck company would not have made a difference. Firefighters are cross trained between the engines and the trucks and they have the same basic equipment- air tanks and thermal imaging cameras.
Firefighters should not be immune from budget cuts. The union is fighting to keep 5 firefighters on a truck when clearly that is a luxury rather than a neccessity. Perhaps if the union would have said ok to the 4 firefighters to a truck, then they could have kept that truck from being "browned out".
I don't agree with Barett much, but in this case, Barrett is correct.
